Ring Type Joint Gaskets
“RTJ” (Ring Type Joint) gaskets are manufactured in accordance with API-6A, API-17D and ASME B16.20 specifications. RTJ’s have “R, RX and BX” numbers assigned to them for pipe size and pressure class identification. Stock materials include Soft Iron, Low Carbon Steel, F5, F11, F9, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, DUPLEX, Monel, NICKEL, 410, Inconel and Incoloy. RING JOINT GASKETS are precision machined metallic sealing rings, suitable for high temperature and high pressure applications. By applying pressure to the seal interface through bolt force, the softer metal of the gasket flows into the micro-fine structure of the harder flange material, creating a very tight and efficient seal. They are available in several common profiles to suit a variety of industry standard flanges. Reliable rubber coated ring joint gaskets are made from precision machined carbon steel rings to API specifications and utilize a special metal-to-rubber bonding process of oil resistant nitrile rubber. Ideal for hydraulic testing of BOP’s (Blowout Preventers), Christmas Trees, Chokes & Kill Manifolds and available in most of the commonly utilize sizes of R and BX series rings. Rubber Coated Ring Gaskets are used to minimize the risk of fl ange damage during testing and should be removed and replaced with specified gasket for actual application. Ring type joints are primarily used by the oil, gas and petrochemical and offshore industries. They are also commonly used on valve/pipework assemblies and high integrity vessel joints.
APPLICATION:-
- R Type Ring Type Joint Gasket
- RX Type Ring Type Joint Gasket
- BX Type Ring Type Joint Gasket
- R and RX Series
- SR & SBX Type Ring Type Joint Gasket
- Speciality Type Ring Type Joint Gasket
Ring Type Joints are used to seal flanged connections subject to high pressures and temperatures. These precision made solid metal gaskets form a metal-to-metal seal with the flanges. Precision Machine Tools manufactures large range ring gaskets in accordance with API-6A/ASME 16.20. We manufacture four basic types of ring gaskets; octagonal shape, oval shape, type RX and type BX. These basic shapes are used in pressures up to 20,000 psi. The dimensions are standardized and require specially grooved flanges. The octagonal cross section has a higher sealing efficiency than the oval and would be the preferred gasket. Stock materials include soft iron, low carbon steel, 4-6 chrome (F5), 304, 316, Inconel and Incoloy.
These basic shapes are used in a variety of applications with pressures up to 20,000 PSI. The dimensions are standardized and require specially grooved flanges by where a corresponding “R” or “BX” number is assigned for pipe size and pressure class for gasket identification. They are widely used in the Oil/Gas and Petrochemical industry, in valves and pipe-work. Choice of material may be determined to suit higher temperatures and aggressive media. They comply with ASME B16.20 standards and API spec 6A (where applicable).
The gasket hardness is carefully controlled and shall always be softer than the mating flanges to ensure a good seal and no damage to the flange surface (note: RTJ gaskets should not be re-used). All SMITH RTJ gaskets are manufactured from fully traceable materials and are stamped to the requirements of API 6A and ASME B16.20. DIN 50049 3.1 certification is supplied with all orders. The gaskets are machined to the required tolerances and surface finish using high quality CNC lathes. All soft iron and carbon steel RTJ gaskets are electroplated with zinc 0.0005″ thick in accordance with API specifications. Other non-standard styles of metal rings are also available like combination, IX, Delta and Lens to customer specifications.
METALLIC GASKETS FOR PIPE FLANGES
The Ring Type Joint gasket, or RTJ gasket, was originally developed for the petroleum refining industry. The refining processes produced extremely high pressures with flammable and explosive medias. The oil fields, rigs, and down hole equipment continue to utilize the RTJ gasket due to their high pressure service capability. Being a metal to metal type solid seal, the RTJ is capable of withstanding extremely high pressures in very hot applications.
Ring Joint Gaskets are either octagonal or oval made to ASME B 16.20 in various sizes. API Ring Joint Gaskets come in two basic types, an oval cross section and an octagonal cross section. These basic shapes are used in pressures up to 10,000 psi. The dimensions are standardized and require specially grooved flanges. These are identified by numbers R, RX or BX that relate toFlange size, pressure, class, and appropriate standards ASME B 16.20 or API 6A. Ring Joint Gaskets are manufactured in various types. These Ring Joint Gaskets are developed in accordance toAPI6A & ASME B 16.20 specifications. Materials for these gaskets are selected based on suitability for service conditions. It is essential that Ring Joint Gaskets be of a hardness lower than the Flanges.
APPLICATION:-
- Ring type joints excel in high-pressure applications such as oil and gas exploration and production.
- RTJs are also used on valves and pipework assemblies in refineries and other process industries.
- Sub-Sea wellhead & Christmas tree systems
- Ring joint gaskets are metallic sealing rings suitable for high pressure and high temperature applications and are fitted in ring groove type flanges.
- Refining
- Down Hole
- Christmas Tree Processes
- Subsea
- Super-Heated Steam
- API 6A
- ASME B16.20
- ASME B16.5
- ANSI, DIN & JIS Flanges
Available in both oval and octagonal profiles, standard style R ring type joints are manufactured to meet both API 6A and ASME B16.20 sizes and ratings.
Also available are Style RX ring type joints which energizes on assembly. This type is designed to fit the same groove as a style R therefore making them interchangeable. For very high pressures, often found in sub-sea wellhead and Christmas tree systems, the style BX is used. Subsea versions of all styles are available with pressure balance holes.
We also design and manufacture special RTJ and bespoke solid metal gaskets for topside and subsea blow-out preventers.

API ring Joint gaskets come in two basic types, an oval cross section (Style 377) and an octagonal cross section (Style 388). These basic shapes are used in pressures up to 10,000 psi. The dimensions are standardized and require specially grooved flanges.
- The octagonal cross section has a higher sealing efficiency than the oval and would be the preferred gasket.
- The oval cross section can be used in the old type round bottom groove. The newer flat bottom groove design will accept either the oval or the octagonal cross section. The sealing surfaces on the ring joint grooves must be smoothly finished to 63 micro inches and to be free of objectionable ridges, tool or chatter marks. They seal by an initial line contact or a edging action as the compressive forces are applied.
The hardness of the ring should always be less than the hardness of the flanges to prevent flange deformation. Dimensions for API ring joint gaskets and grooves are covered in ASME B16.20 and API6A.
